The REP's had total control and could have moven any funding for whatever they wanted.
And why do the civil servants (even coast guards) don't get paid over a political disagreement, and the Senate and the Congress get paid and will eventually get a $ 10,000.00 pay raise?

The Republicans did control both houses of congress, but funding bills that are passed by the house must also be passed by the Senate and to pass the Senate 60 votes or more are required. At the time the Republicans only had 51 seats in the Senate and in order to get the required 60 votes would have required support by a bunch of Democrats

No brother - it is because we the American voter are dumb. We keep voting in people that give themselves raises, the best healthcare, the best retirement programs while they stand up and tell us “I am working for the people”. Until we wise up nothing will ever really change. As we saw Obama”s 8 years of Hope & Change is thankfully a distant memory - we will see how much of Trumo’s Hope & Change lasts.
Can we not get rid off all of them and start fresh. We can have different fews and still talk civilised and meet somewhere agreeable to all.

if people would dump the 2 major parties and kill the duopoly they have on government we could get this thing fixed. Biggest problem is that everyone is waiting for others to do it first. Winning has become so important that people will vote against their own values because the guy running who shares their values "cant win"
All I can say to that is if you wont be the first how can you expect others to do it - - - -someone has to set the example and hope others follow and they have to do it first because it is whats right and second they have to be willing to do it knowing they may not live long enough to see things actually change
people have to forget about picking the winner - and actually vote for the best person instead of the best politician

Edward Neal covered the reason why the Republicans couldn't get wall funding when they controlled the House and the Senate. Republicans could have done it with what is known as "the nuclear option" which would change the law from a 60 persons needed pass a bill to a simple majority of 51. This has been used before to appoint judges by both parties. It was not used in this case because all funding bills from here forward could be decided by a simple majority and both sides like having some control when their party is the minority. As you pointed out, it is best for a democracy to keep the 60 in place, even if it can be frustrating at times.
I'm not 100 percent sure how departments are chosen to be impacted by a partial shutdown. When it started they said 1/3rd of the government would be shutdown. However, that fraction is slowly moving toward 2/3rds, because as the shutdown continues more departments funds are running out. That is how the Coast Guard was a new entry into the shutdown this week. Since the Coast Guard, TSA, IRS and many other departments are considered vital services they must report to work with furloughed pay. They get paid for all their time once the shutdown ends. Other Departments like Parks, FDA and others do not report to work and do not get any pay now and no back pay once the shutdown ends. They are basically unemployed until the shutdown ends. Though some have taken on new jobs to help keep their households afloat.

Congress makes the budget, they make sure they are taken care of. They can also use the excuse that they need to work during a shutdown to get the budget funded. It is easy to find the double standard there, but that is politics.
Civil servants are caught up in a "political disagreement" because as Edward Neal pointed out, it is a government funding issue. Do they need to be caught up in it? No, there are bills on the table that would open the entire government, but don't cover wall funding. Civil servants are caught up in this because President Trump fears, rightly so, that he will not get the boarder wall he promised his base if he doesn't make all those civil servants suffer enough to force the Democrats to approve wall funding. They are pawns being used as leverage.

Some people would say that the Republican party got hijacked by Trump and right wing extremists and the response seems to be that Socialists and Liberal extremists are doing everything they can to hijack the Democrat party
the result of all of this is that the vast majority of people on both sides who to tend to be moderate are left with parties that do not represent us.
When I saw this coming in the Republican party I chose to leave them before it got too bad and I became a Libertarian. The Libertarian party is much more aligned with my values than either of the major parties - seems as if the Libertarian takes the best ideas from both the right and the left and dumps the garbage that both seem to want to hang on too
Anyway I would like to invite you all both Democrats and Republicans to join me. Dump the duopoly and vote your values - - we may not have the winners in many races for a very long time, but who knows the way the two majors are headed with a little help from us things might change faster than we expect

While the tit for tat aspect isn't necessary (funny .. but not necessary ... ) beyond that reality is you can't negotiate if you are not here, and she was not due to return until after the end of the next pay period deadline so her leaving was a guarantee that the furloughed federal employees would miss their next check ... let that sink in a moment .... then I would have thought after the Hawaii, and Puerto Rico trips they would have cancelled this trip on their own .... neither situations looks good .... but .. politicians ....

If they are going to have a shutdown I personally believe the first things to stop being funded should be all political trips and all other discretionary things that these politicians love to do - also if government employees are not going to be paid because these people can not reach an agreement then it should be their pay and all other perks that get stopped first

They should not be able to leave Washington until this government shutdown is over. After all you cannot do anything if you are not in town. All of this just means that the Dems do not give a CRAP about the American public.
This should have been done on day one. All parties involved in the ending of the gov, shutdown. No gov. funding of trips home. You cannot get things done in Washington when you are not there.
