I thought since they lock in on the front lip you needed to set them first then slide the fenders in under them.

It is kind of like a puzzle. The fenders go on, then the center, followed by the inserts that have to tuck under the front edge of the fender.
Watch painter's video's again and reverse the order.

low speed and no center hood works for me. The center hood piece is for show, or when it's raining!

Don't forget @GTS1998. If memory serves correctly he was the first to cut up the hood but leave the two parts up by the windshield.
