Well damn...

  • My icon is for-real. It was early in the morning and I was the only vehicle on the street and I was speeding. The officer was a really nice fella, we talked about motorcycles for a few minutes and then he just gave me a warning. He asked if he could take a picture of the SS and I said "Sure, if I can take a picture of your cruiser."

  • These help in some situations.

    Do they though? Serious question.

I don't have one, but I've been thinking about the techniques, and I find it hard to believe they work.

    1) Police won't leave the guns on, they point and shoot, meaning you only have a chance of you catch the beam bounce off the car in front of you. Which, chances are, will be too late to adjust. And on an open road without traffic, you won't even get that.

    2) Cops hide at the bottom of hills, and catch you as you go over the crest. In that case, you probably won't get and bounce, even if there is a car in front of you.

    3) Most new cars have laser guided cruise control, which would lead to a lot of false alarms.

The way I see it, there will be very few times it will actually work. Am I wrong?

  • IMHO works like a charm - saved my SS a few times this season

While the do point and shoot it isn't like a gun - they have to get and keep a good tone for them to get you - while it's only a couple of seconds it's enough time to get off the accelerator and on the break

Unless you are the only guy on the road you'll get detection from the cars in from of you - cars, trucks, etc bounce waves in all directions

I haven't got false laser from other vehicles - maybe just not enough new ones in my area

  • I have the Redline pictured above and I have the newer Max2 that is also an Escort model..

The detector has to be strong enough to reach out and detect the triggering from up to 3 miles away. So you can detect the guy way up in front of you when he gets triggered. The Redline is the best and longest distance detecting unit on the market. And now the Max2 is the 2nd longest. And it has GPS and also some serious filtering (the reason the Redline is the best).

In my world what I try to achieve is a balance that keeps me safe from loosing my license. My detectors save me from 3 out of 5 possible tickets. That means I just get 2 tickets. And of those I ALWAYS hire a local attorney to get the ticket either removed and pay the cost or get it reduced to some other infraction. And I just completed driving school for my 6th time in 10 years. But guess what,,,,,,, I have no tickets on my record. ..

So yep. They work. They work real good...

  • Yep
They work good if you know how to use it. Its not fool proof by any means but the Redline IMO is the only way to go. It will detect most radar miles ahead if there is traffic on the road, if not slow down. The Laser is too fast and short notice for even the Redline, but good thing about Laser is they have to be stopped and use it like a gun so they arnt as user friendly for the most part. They can catch most speeders as they run down the road with their instant on radar.
I don't have one to run triple digits down the road, but its easy in the SS to get 10 over and not even realize it, and the Redline keeps me honest.

  • I've done a fair bit of research over the last few days. Apparently they don't do much up here, unfortunately.

Radar Detectors for Alberta – KMPH.ca

"Alberta police forces have many state of the art speed measurement devices in their arsenal. These tools include the infamous DragonEye handheld laser guns,DragonCam photo-LIDAR systems, latest K-band MultaRadar CD photo radar, on top of the wide spread laser speed traps and Ka-band moving radar."

"Portable laser guns and handheld DragonEye have been sighted throughout the whole Alberta region, where as the DragonEye LidarCam photo system is used extensively in Edmonton area. To get proper protection, you will need AL Priority laser defense. A radar detector is not enough."

The only one that is somewhat useful is the MRCD edition of the Redline, which is not the regular Redline sold in North America. $800.... And that doesn't include the laser jammer.

    Oh well...

  • I just updated my Escort Max detector bit the Detector Tools software and I think it has cut back my range for some reason.... Some of the places I used to see K band warnings are not going off as fast as they were. I am going to try to go backward wit the firmware and see if it changes,

P.S. I also run a tablet and have the Escort Live app via bluetooth on it. I had to download the APK file to install it.... Its not available in the Google Play store or the app store for a tablet... But it will install.
It is ok, but its not that great where I live... It does work once I get to a larger city....

P.S.S. One time I left the detector on and let it continue to go off (only visual, I had it muted) and the officer came up to the window.... He immediately saw it and said I was the fastest person he had seen hit his brakes once he popped me and come down to the speed limit. I was in a ML63 AMG Mercedes SUV. And I was really moving on down the road. I am going to say I was pushing 1?? mph.... The ML63 has 575hp and has huge AMG Brake calipers on it...

I could tell he was going to be cool about it and I said "Do you see all the stuff in the front floorboard?..... It was all in the back seat right before my detector went off!" I actually was told to keep it under 70 and stay safe!... So sometimes having a sense of humor helps.

  • I'm working a different route. If i can hack into my local police cars GPS systems I will know where they are before they know where i am. Naw it's probably not worth the jail time. :D
