Dead battery

Can I jump my slingshot by putting the hot lead from my truck jumper cables to the red post on the alternator and then the black to the ground on the motor?
This way I don’t have to pull the whole battery compartment apart. -
sorry in advance if this is a seriously boneheaded question

This way I don’t have to pull the whole battery compartment apart.Yes, you can put the positive cable on the nut on the side of the alternator for jump starting. We typically ground to the cable coming off the back drivers side of the engine when jump starting, just FYI.

My experience with Motorcycle batteries...1 time 'dead' ---- time for a new battery.
These smaller batteries don't recharge --- Slingshot or Gold Wing.

This thread reminded me that our battery in our 2015 is starting to get a lil weak so I started to think about adding a jump port and found this on sale for $50, including shipping:

The alternator port is underneath on the 2015 so attaching jumper cables there really is not easily feasible, $50 appears to be half the cost of most other options and apparently a very easy install??

It’s alive!
Once again this forum never ceases to amaze me! I am so grateful. We shall see how my charge is in the morning.😎 -
For what it's worth. Many moons ago while in AMI (American Motorcycle Institute) that very subject was brought up as to jump starting a motorcycle. No instructor would advise as to yes or no. I suppose that not all situations apply equally to individual motorcycles and the amperage they can handle. I imagine the slingshot is far more capable than motorcycles of long ago. The one piece of advice they did mention was to not start the charging vehicle and simply just hook up the charging cable and go directly to a start attempt. Especially when attempting a jump when using heavy duty truck batteries.

All replies are welcome and appreciated but Dave@DDMWorks jumped in first and ya really can’t do much better in my eyes 🙂
My First attempt at the forum with an issue was when my brake lights and failure light started popping up in my first sling. The amount of help I got and how immediate it was was really humbling and impressive . -
Let us know how things work out.

Those jump boxes are amazing. I just checked the one I have in the slingshot. After 7 months it still retained a 95% charge! I recharged it to a full charge and it should be good-to-go through winter.

Was going to get one but only good for engines up to 3.5 liter

I keep one in every vehicle but had one do a melt down while under the seat of my Jeep. Swelled up so bas it tore the carrying case open. These Lithium batteries scare me a little.

I think they are good for larger engines than that. I have two of them also.
-
Mine would jump my F350 with the older large diesel 5 times on one charge.
-
they make these portable jump starters in many different sizes for different demands - there are the smaller ones like MADDMOE linked that are great for 4 & 6 cylinder engines and they go all the way up to ones like this one - NOCO 2000 Amp jump starter that are good for 8 liter gasoline and 6 liter diesel engines.
I had a DBPower jumpstarter that I carried in my slingshot until last year - like DJohnson had happen it started swelling up. after doing some research I found out that it was a common problem with that brand if they were stored over 90 degrees which around these parts is almost every day - after doing more research and hearing all good things I decided to replace it with one from NOCO - this is the one I now carry - NOCO Boost 500 Amp jump starter - easily big enough for my slingshot and probably any car I might be asked to help
-
Yes that was the one I had also. That two of those and replaced the bad one with the same one. I will watch that 90 degree thing. Thanks.

mine was the DBPower 800 - - nice starter, but like you the swelling made me very uncomfortable -- - although it still seemed to function and hold a charge
DJohnson - - check out this link - DBPower jump starter - - they even say it right in the sales information
- Warning - In summer and other hot weather, please avoid store the jump starter inside the car or other high temperature place. The storage temperature shouldn’t exceed 95°F (35°C) and operating temperature shouldn’t exceed -4°F-140°F (-20°C-60°C), otherwise, the battery will swell.
oh and I guess its 95 degrees which still makes it worthless to me when for most of the year we are well above that
also in all of my reading of reviews when looking for a replacement this is the only jumpstarter I have seen come with this kind of warning - seriously it doesn't have to get very hot out to get way over 95 in a locked car with the windows up - - what good is it if you can only have it with you when its not hot???
