Engine Oil Lubricant Discussion Thread

Well, not quite200 miles on fresh engine, and fixing to put about 400 miles on it tomorrow, went ahead and changed it out to 10-30 VR1.....
Seems like it's running better already!!
Really, it's worth the peice of mind having the good stuff in, I may try a bounce off the rev limiter now... -
Agreed!! I searched my Alpha manual several times thinking I missed that info somewhere, but it's not in there. Had I not been with Henry when they did the install, I wouldn't have known the frequency for changing oil. I actually video recorded that conversation so I wouldn't forget some of those details later.
Do you happen to remember what weight Rotella T6 he recommended?

My mechanic said taking the zinc out of oil is resulting in a higher rate of engine failures...he uses a zinc additive
My GMC pick up requires a mixture of half oil half synthetic or it voids the warranty. Same for the SS right?
If we add zinc will it void the warranty?
Your mechanic is correct, with the types of failures varying with the type of engine...zinc doesn't affect every engine design the same way.
I doubt adding zinc would violate your warranty...especially if you didn't mention it
The SS's spec is simply the new Dexos formulation, 5W-30. Would you be OK following the same method as your pickup? Yes, absolutely. Depending on which oil you use, it may also contain the zinc additive.

Followed @Dave@DDMWorks advice and changed my oil this morning and used the Valvoline VR1 oil in 10w-30 and the K&N filter.
Went for a ride and it might just be my imagination but engine seemed just a hair quieter and possibly ran a few degrees cooler. Could be total BS out of my head but it sounded happy!?!?
Forgot to add - the oil I drained had about 2,000 super-charged miles on it. The color was what I hoped to see - brownish coffee color, not black / opaque.

-
I sure did, like another posted, it's prolly in my head but it does run really good! I ended up with a little over 400 miles this last weekend and looks like fuel Milage improved slightly. Engine is broke in good and I accually treated it better doing that than stock engine when I first bought it! Lol
-
Wow so Better fuel mileage from the oil? Or was it because Highway speeds rather than stop and go city driving? Glad to hear it runs good. Sounds like this is the new standard for us built engine and supercharged slingshots. I am glad @Dave@DDMWorks found the optimum oil for these forced induction machines.
-
Probably a combination of engine broken in good along with the oil change. I have been using odometer and fuel bars along with how many gallons of gas I put in and looks like 21-23 mpg....at 70-75 mph cruising.
Side note from another thread, I also road with my GPS, speedometer is 100% accurate up to 70 mph, at 75 mph on gauge, GPS shows 73mph.
80 on gauge shows 76 on GPS... nice to know. -
That all sounds promising. I'm super pumped! Thanks for update!
-
Ok, so after reading this report has anyone changed their mind about the oil they want to use? If so which one do you want to use and why? The zinc facts are eye opening...
-
Right now no. Still using what I know. I may change to an oil with more conditioners since I don't run with a cat

That was a nice read.... Thank you!

Looking at 540 RAT's website, the Valvoline 5W30 Full Synthetic High Mileage with MaxLife Technology is rated # 5 on the list. This is marked as a High Mileage oil. Based on his rating, I'm thinking about trying it with my Hahn turbo setup. Anybody have any experience using it in their Slingshot?
