Big Purchases... like , dislike?

  • Well, wife has been on me about a new bed. Went to sleep number & after hearing from friends who own, couldn’t justify a $10k bed that tells my smartphone how much I moved in REM sleep. Honestly, felt like other beds I was looking @.

Well, ended up with a Simmons BeautyRest. BASE Top & bottom up/ down movement, USB/ outlets built in base, under bed lighting & massage ( more of a big vibrator ) but you can feel it. We got a Firm mattress, with cooling, the most of everything...Lady gave us $120 cooling pillows for 1/2 price. Got all this for a whopping......

    $6200 OTD $2600 off ( yeah almost $9k for a bed). X/ , 4th of July sale.

Now I can’t tell you right now if I like as we don’t physically have ( top selling bed - out of stock for week plus)

Anyhow, thought we could list our big purchases inform one another for anyone in the market for something..???

    AND.......

I DID HEAR yesterday on the radio there releasing a HOME coffee / BEER maker that works like a kuerig..!!!

  • Man I barely ever use my bed. It’s a temper pedic. You did bring up an interesting question that’s been rattling around inside my brain for a while.

How do bed stores stay in business? They’re giant buildings and I’ve never seen a customer in one. I routinely pass three huge ones in Richmond and there’s not a soul there. There’s another huge one in Williamsburg. I went in there looking to purchase an adjustable base for the temperpedic which is like a 2500 dollar bedframe and the guy didn’t even want to fool with me.

  • @BONES we just got a queen sleep number about 2 months ago and got everything for less than 3k delivered directly from the company. Not sure who quoted you such high prices... but, for something you spend 1/3 your life in ~> any good bed is worth the investment IMHO!

@ericastar76 we went to the store and then another Sleep # to see if sales guy was a BSer. Besides financing rates they WILL not have sales or flex price between stores and online prices will not differ. The bed we wanted was the same @ both locations. King, split loaded is what we were looking at.

I hear ya on the bed, your in it every night , that’s why I could & couldn’t justify... X/

  • The mattress industry is quite interesting. Generally speaking a mattress box set is going to have a 200% markup from manufacture to MSRP. 50 to 75% of that goes to the manufacturer and the rest to the retailer. I have never paid more than 50% of the MSRP and everyone makes money.

  • I have a king sleep number and I love it. I bought it after my bike accident about 4 years ago and I love it. It was super expensive but it allows me to sleep in same bed with my wife for six months or so after the accident I had to sleep on a hard futon. My sleep number is like 97 where hers is like 30. I think ours was right around 5ish.

  • The last time I went mattress shopping, I ended up getting escorted out of the store and banned from returning. The saleswomen said that we could try out the mattress before we bought it and for us to try it out like we were sleeping through the night. I guess she didn't realize we slept in the nude and on our backs

    Nobody gets outta here ALIVE

  • the mattress you purchased as some nice features - I did not even know they were available -massage, usb ports, light, etc. I purchased a new mattress about 2 years ago and went with online only retail. Lessa. I do like it but it was only about 1200 plus a nice blanket. They now sell sheets as well.

However, a mattress is a wise purchase...one needs sleep.

    Scary!!!!!!

  • I tend to prefer a firm mattress while my Wife prefers a plusher (aka softer) mattress. I also am cheap and can't see paying some of the rices the mattress stores demand. I know they're making money even when they have a so-called 50% off sale. Our last 2 mattresses were mattress-in-a-box units from CostCo or Sams. but are a little more firm than my Wife really likes.
I tend to use the bed to read before going to sleep, but typically move to the floor for an initial sleep period of 1-2 hours before moving back to the bed to complete my sleep. My Wife usually prefers a Lazy Boy recliner, but I don't understand how she can sleep on her side since the recliner isn't anywhere close to flat!
I recently came across this mattress at Sam's (prod20633924.ip) that I am considering as a replacement for our current mattress we bought in late Summer 2009. I've found it hard to find a soft mattress online since mattress softness seem to be pretty much a subjective thing. Now, I just need to decide on a King adjustable base or dual twin adjustable bases and mattresses. My overall goal is to get everything for as far under $1.5-2K as possible while meeting our needs.

  • We just bought a Simmons BeautyRest this past spring. It was the Black Diamond Series if I remember correctly. We got the extra firm, since both of us have some back trouble at times. We had gotten a memory foam mattress a few years ago, and never did like it much. It had a tradition box springs, and they were still in great shape. A local store was going out of business, and they somehow had just the mattress, no box springs. They offered it to me at "Display model" price, plus had a sale with like 25% off. We got the mattress for around $700, and we love it. Mattress alone was supposed to be around $3,300 retail.

  • Had a Simmons Beautyrest recharge series for about 3 years...oddly broke down faster than expected. This time I decided to go with a bed in a box...went with a Helix and am really surprised how nice it is. My wife loved it from day one...I on the other hand took almost 2 months to get really comfortable in it.

As far as other big purchases...It's been cutting in to the mod budget. New deck for the backyard, Central air, new flooring... Plus one of our rentals needs new carpet and flooring...it's getting old. It's one of the reasons the quad conversion isn't done.

Actively looking for another sling...It is time...

  • due to severe back issues, I gave up my water bed of 28 years. We bought a I comfort with adjustable base in queen, I can raise the legs up re-leaving pressure off my back. Wife wishes now we bought a king so adjustments could be separate on both sides. She would rather have the head up which I hate. But they are quite pricey.

By the time I save up for mods, I have to buy another rear tire :cursing:
