Friends today we will not speak about hell fire and brimstone. We will not speak of the eternal punishment our souls will endure if we do not follow the righteous path.
Today, we will take our first step on the journey. A journey not for my benefit and not for your benefit. But rather, a journey to benefit one of us who has given much and asked for so little.
CAN I GET AN AMEN?
Today, we start anew. We start one of the most important journeys we may ever be on - a journey to give back.
I hear you. I hear you say, "I gave at the office". I hear you, "I keep my Slingshot clean .... most of the time". I hear you, "I give so I can modify". "I change my rear tire when the tread is gone". "I ride every chance I get". I hear you.
But today is A NEW DAY my slinging brothers and sisters. A new day to give.
"How much do I have to give?", you ask. A small amount in comparison to how much we have received! "How long to do I have to give for", you ask. Only a blink of an eye in comparison to your life.
CAN I GET AN AMEN?
"What do I do?" Four little things. Only four. If you do all of these things, I promise .......
- Do this and share this with those you know who have been lucky enough to receive. DO NOT ASSUME they will see this post. If you really want to say 'thank you' make sure you reach out to them and ask them to take part in this. THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF 90%+ OF RECIPIENTS PARTICIPATE. I know you have said thank you already but this thank you will last longer than the email or note you wrote or phone call you made. Maybe @Painter will share a list of folks that he has shared his talent with you and folks can reach out to them
- Send a full size photo [see post #8 and #10 from 2019 Slingshot Calendar (official thread) ] to tributetopainter AT gmail DOT com or tributeforpainter@gmail.com. If you already submitted a photo when we were working on the calendar, it's a new day and I would like you to submit it again - after all, it's only a few minutes out of your life
- Include your real name and your forum name in the email
- Write something about the gift you received. Whether it is the creation number if you had your entire Slingshot done or what color(s) were used or what year and color it was before. Speak from your heart as your words in all or in part will be included in the tribute. If you need help word-smithing - just ask
- If you forget one of the above, don't worry, I'll remind you.
I hear you. "How long do I have?" you ask. Let's aim for all submissions are due by Valentine's Day - Wednesday, February 14, 2018. STOP - If you received a treasure from @Painter then the best time for you to get your submission in is now - take the time now to say 'thank you' again. Don't forget to copy this and email it to or text it to or call that person you know that isn't on this forum (or maybe they haven't been on in a while) and get them on their way to say "thank you' again.
"Fine, I'll do it". I know you meant that as "Fine, I can't wait to do that! Then what happens?"
From the first submission received until our goal completion date of Saint Patrick's Day on Saturday, March 17, 2018 I will refine the photos submitted. Adjusting the exposure and tone; removing blemishes, small scratches, and other small undesired bits; retouching the photos to make them as high quality as possible; and finally I will put together the tribute piece combining the photos and what you wrote with your submission.
After a lot of research and thought, I think the best tribute piece is one that will last for a long time and one that fits a variety of members needs. For that reason, I will be using Create, Print, and Sell Professional-Quality Photo Books | Blurb. With Blurb I have a lot of different formats I can use - from hardcover books to softcover to e-books. It also allows me to set the profit I want to make on each project - for this project, the profit will be set at $0.00 (or $0.01 if I can't select zero). But best of all, Blurb takes care of printing AND fulfillment AND shipping. All together Blurb is a winner allowing you to purchase what meets your needs - Blurb collects the money - Blurb prints it - Blurb packages it - Blurb ships it - which makes it easier for me to keep costs down for you [wish I could do this with the calendars].
I'll be looking for some help and review but we will deal with that in early March
CAN I GET AN AMEN?

brother @MiM i have a secret special mission for you - I will PM you tomorrow
@Ross AMEN!!!
I was blessed over the Holidays to receive a message from the MASTER @Painter. He had noticed that I won the Candy Red Valve Cover in Winchester. With me having the Orange Madness Slingshot, told me he would paint me a Candy Orange 1 to replace it and throw in a Coil Cover. I told him no Rush I just appreciate him taking the time to do this for me. I can't say enough about @Painter. He is above and beyond 1 of the best guys. When I met @V-SHOT and he told me about this forum, I joined immediately. Then I met @av8ingtom. 2 of the best guys you could EVER run into. From DAY 1 I have been honored to read, laugh and learn from everyone's post here. Like I have said before, I never expected to gain a Family when I purchased my Slingshot. Anyways Blah, Blah, @Ross soon I will have some stuff from the MASTER @Painter hopefully he has the time to get it done by February but I am not in a rush. So when it gets to me I will GLADLY get you pictures.
Thank You all!!!
The rumour from the magic cave is that he is working like the jolly old elf himself. He is producing a level of magic in a day that us mortals could only dream of in a month.
His creations are just a bridge to brotherhood that has transcended all others.
To that I am greatful.
Tribute to Painter .....

Submissions are due by Valentine's Day - Wednesday, February 14, 2018
Congratulations for @av8ingtom for sending in the first submissions - thank you sir, it is appreciated
Let me know if what I sent will work for you!
Done with pleasure.
Well just to rub it in. I will be working with the jolly ole elf next weekend as we do some much needed improvements to the workshop. I get to spend a whole weekend!!
This may be lengthy so grab a cookie!
I don’t get notifications of this thread but when tagged I began reading the posts. I was going to avoid it entirely (as most know how embarrassed I get!) but @Ross is working tirelessly to pay a tribute to a man who is a mere fraction of this wonderful place.
I was one of the first on The Dark Side and wanted a place full of trust and “paying forward”. So, I decided to put my money where my posts were and reached out to @slingking offering to work with my Dealer to purchase his Sling there and I would paint it at just material cost. (Realize he was from Oregon and I was in Indiana!) He showed the Forum that Members could be trusted and agreed.
I never put a mile on it but picked it up on my trailer, did the custom work, trailered it then to @DuaneIndy who put it in his garage for the reveal. Joe flew in and @WingShot and I picked him up at the airport and the rest is history.
Now comes the weird part.... I figured my material costs at $1365. Kay and I sat down and agreed to charge him only half of the costs to help cover his trip. That started this wonderful journey of “paying forward”.
Since then, I bought a couple of new valve covers and coil pack covers to “gift” to others in order to expand the “pay it forward” idea. Boy.... did that explode! At last count, I’ve given away 76 valve covers and 74 coil covers! ( most I purchased new and some @Turbosling donated because of some damage) I have never charged anyone a cent for these or for any shipping cost.
This does not include the gifted NRG steering wheels and DDM or Assault hubs to put them on! @SlingRider now can replace these in his sleep.... or many other things I’ve gifted.
Of course, when it comes to full paint jobs a had to charge something to not end up in the poor house but have tried to keep these cost much lower than normal and always try to do little “extras” to boot.
Now.... many reading this drivel are thinking “ this guy is bragging about what he has done and his left arm is longer than the right from patting himself on the back”! I assure you that is not the case!
@Goats_Hogs is currently in production. He didn’t think he deserved a “gift”. He is a simple man... unassuming, humble and giving....... exactly who I would choose!
Concerning his “gift”, I will share a PM sent to him off the cuff concerning his valve cover/coil cover combo:
I don’t do things for recognition. I do things to give back in some small way to those I admire. One of the reasons I don’t sign anything even though I’ve been pleaded to do so. The work is mine until you receive it...then it is your and yours alone.
You may or may not want a gift but gifts are more than what they appear. They don’t expect anything in return. They don’t need payment, they don’t need praise, they don’t need shared..... In fact, all of that comes to the giver in just the giving.
This is how I feel.... but I am certainly not alone. Look at the generosity exhibited on this Forum! Truly amazing! There is not a single Member I would not trust. There is not a single Member who has not been an example for us to live by. Where can you find that anywhere but here?
I have been truly blessed in life with a wonderful family, great friends, and now, a Forum Family who have become very special. If I pass this life tomorrow, I would go knowing I’ve been “Gifted” beyond comprehension by all of you.
Now.... as to the “Tribute” thing. You know that if you asked me I would be against it. And now, with a little over three years of Slinging, it would be difficult to get most contacted or even to take the time to submit anything to Ross.... That is just human nature!
@Ross ... Here is my suggestion. Do the tribute but do it to encompass all in our community.....A Forum tribute as it were. A book that has no starting date or ending date but is timeless. A book you can keep more than a calendar year and would contain memories that lasts lifetimes. (You already have amassed some great material!)
@Shatneyman posted some videos showing Slings but his depictions of friends and family I look at over and over again.......
A Tribute to us...What we’ve become....What we will turn over to new blood.....What we will leave behind for others to discover.... That is the Tribute worth more than any one of us!
Yes, I would be honored to have some of my work displayed.... even a little ”blurb” would be great. But take this adventure and do a true “Tribute” to the Family we have forged together! I will pledge to help financially and physically to make this reality as I’m sure others here would do also.
I respect all of you.
There is a reason we call him master and an even bigger reason I call him friend.
Jim you are the embodiment of this forum.
Love ya Man!!
Oh and the first one that calls him a bragger can step in the ring with me. Most of ya can kick my butt, but I’ll still be in there waiting.
That why he is!!!! He is just so humble, I pull my
any time
I really admire Jim @Painter I look up to him and have really enjoyed my time with him. Not just about Sling stuff but I told him personal things about a problems a family member of mine who was having problems. I listened and took in his wisdom. He really cares about people! He isn’t a bad painter either! @SlingRider is also someone I admire just for the record. Everyone should really see his wife’s quilt room it’s like a craft store. These people and there is so many more in my less than a year on here have made such a positive impact on my life.
