In case anyone was thinking of upgrading their system.........
New 2018 Ride Command System is not backwards-compatable with previous model year Slingshots.

I added this to FB and to TSD...I'll add it here too:
Let me suggest a better and cheaper option:
Get the Ride Control App on your phone and mirror cast to it. You now have the same features...if not more...for more than half the cost of the Ride Command unit and GPS add on. If you are worried about water proofing, you can get the $200 cover and still be under the price of the Ride Commander and GPS unit by almost $1400.
-
Looks like one of the main reasons it won't fit is because the start button and the toggle buttons have been moved in the 2018 model - they're now down below the infotainment system area.
It may also need other connections that are not present in the pre-2018 models, I don't know.

Let me suggest a better and cheaper option:
Pioneer AVIC-8201NEX Package
I'm interested in this. Do you have a link to a weatherproof cover that will work with this? Do you know of anyone who has gotten it installed and working? Photos?

Polaris Slingshot Marine Dash Kit Waterproof Radio Cover for Double Din Stereo
The install can be done by yourself if you are relatively tech savvy. If not, most Car audio places will do an install for something like this for about $150-$300 depending on how many features you want hooked up.

Don't forget that many of the 2017 items polaris listed as not backwards compatible were. The size and moving the switches would be a change that you would have to make for sure but I'm not sure that there aren't more because of some of the available readings - engine info - you can get through it
-
Honestly...this is what I would go with...and will probably switch to shortly:
Maestro is an awesome datalink set up.
I haven't researched to see if they have an ability to connect with the system on the SS yet.

Frankly the stock entertainment system in my 2016 SL sucks, but on the bright side I dont worry about anyone wanting to steal it. If I put in a really nice system I would never feel comfortable parking any place where I couldnt see it.

an unrelated topic, is it me or that shift knot looks better & better every time I look at it

I bought it with the 20% off coupon last winter and I love it!

According to Noel Hughes the new system is backwards compatible and they have been testing it for months. I'm just waiting to see if it is visible in the sunlight unlike most aftermarket radios/GPS units.

It really doesn't matter, I'm not paying $2500 for it!!!

Noel is as usual, correct. Do not believe a thing that the Polaris site says for compatibility. The site also said the alarm system and garage door opener wouldn't work on older units. I have both working fine in a 2015 base model.

Not sure, the buttons below the screen would be in the way. I wonder how it would install then? Be nice if it worked, I'd like to have that in a Midnight Cherry model, but not so sure about that price they want for it!! But from what I seen, people were having issues on the 2017 models getting the rear cam to work with the aftermarket stereos. -

Really, this is the first I heard that and was wondering what would be different on the SLR 2017 model that the alarm system would only work on it according to the Polaris site!
-
I have the Polaris security system on my 2016. Works fine. If you notice, they say the replacement belt guards, roll hoops, and such will not work on anything but the 17's even when they are made on the 2016 colors. I was told by a parts person at a Polaris dealership it is because of weight. They were so close on federal weight mandates to be classified as a motorcycle in some states, that they couldn't show them as being compatible with 16's. Not sure if that is true, but makes sense to me. My Pearl Red roll hoop covers that their site says doesn't work with 16's, fit just fine on mine also.

There are a few topics that cover what I mentioned. I even showed how to wire them up.

How does the backup camera and screen work in the sunshine? Does the screen wash out?

That is expensive, look at slickdeals if you are going that route. They have been posting a bunch lately. Pioneer and I seen Alpine model listed yesterday I think with wireless Apple Carplay.
