So my question is, do the rear axle bearings have to FAIL totally to be a warranty issue (ss is less then 2yrs) or will they be covered if there is sqeeling/grinding/any noise?

A bearing that is making noise has failed ......shouldn't even be a question if the dealer could get it covered .....

They should warranty it, but don't hold your breath before it gets done.

I had to pay the labor to pull axle and grease the bearings even though it was already making noise. Dealer tightened the nut which was not loose because I bought a torque wrench and socket. I was not satisfied with that and told them to pull the axle. When it was apart the bearings had no grease on them. As far as looks and feel, it looked like the bearing had been dipped in motor oil. I used the high temp. Lucas ( 565 deg. ) if I remember correctly. No noise since probably about 10,000 miles ago. I need to pull and check again.
