Engine dies while running down the road

  • Has anyone experienced this. Happened twice now. Crush g along at 60+ with cruise on and then it just goes dead. First time my speedo stayed on 60 and my tach at 2000.

Second time it all dropped to zero then flashed on and off. Both times I pulled over waited a couple of minutes then restarted. Engine line came on and it said Chk engine.

Jim, trying to keep my place in line behind Tripod, I have to say that this is strange. First you say your speedo stayed on (that's a good thing while you're running down the road), Then the second time, it all dropped and flashed. Pics or it didn't happen, but that will have to be posted in the NSFW section

I would try the simplest things first - check both your battery cables.
most likely not it but always a good place to start.

  • I had the shutoff problem when I went into hard right turns after my swing arm replacement. Turns out the mechanic had put on too much Loctite and it would block the speedsensor when things flexed hard in one direction. Just saying this because a bad speed sensor also shuts down the electronics. My Jeep did the same thing last week. Hooked up the computer and it said left rear speed sensor bad. Changed it and everything was ok. With everything run by computers it is amazing what problems result from parts we never had to deal with pre-computer control.

  • Ex girlfriend had a small mustang that would totally shut down on her without warning. It was the crank sensor...didn't find that out until I sold the car...as mentioned above lots of vehicles now have close to 100 sensors that all feed back to the computer....many times if it throws a code there could be a number of things related to that code down the line. it might only be one of them but the code gets you in to the neighborhood..

  • Thank all. Heading to the dealer Friday.

My belt is pretty tight. Do you think that could be it?

Just don't eat too much at your 4th of July BBQ and your belt should get looser. :) Seriously, as someone has pointed out..it seems the spec for the belt is too tight. That said, doubtful it could cause a problem beyond trashing the rear bearings

  • Ok.. sorry, just got time to really respond. The problem I had with my first SS was more on the acceleration side. It would die under hard throttle as you were pulling out into traffic.

The tripped code would help a little so let's see what the dealer can pull up. The sad thing is that one would hope it's just related to the cruze control but the way they tie all the sensors together it can be hard to isolate. Fingers crossed for a simple fix my friend.

  • there could be several things it could be for instance bad injectors, bad fuel pump, bad fuel filter, timing problems, sensor problems, or computer problems. or even bad gas

Have you used any gas treatments? Starting after it sets a while could be fuel pump.

Stopping without sputter indicates electrical...if it sputters could be fuel related..

  • since SS doesn't use actual OBD2 could Polaris just be camouflaging the OBD2 with their digital mechanic? Just a different plug.

That list is a GM list so the code number could be different but the sensors are the same name. That's a list of the possible things that could be wrong with just our motor....
