  • Cry CLOSET at a College, not plural.

My daughter says they have this crap at Plymouth State. Her class was taking a test a couple weeks ago, a student said they were overwhelmed and needed a few minutes to collect his thoughts. The teacher said sure, you can leave and take some time. He went out to the hall and used his phone to get the answers. He still got a 68. The teacher said he could redo the same test because he paid a lot of money to be there. :00008862:

When I look back at college....I did not really pay a lot for classes....guess that's why I had to study a little (played and lot) to just get that degree.

I was never allowed to leave in the middle of a test, that is new. However, there was no physical "cry closet" in your example. It's funny that the kid still failed.Though it showed an awareness of the climate and a smart tactic to attempt an advantage. :D

  • Numerous schools – Armstrong State University in Georgia, Concordia College—Moorhead in Minnesota, Kent State Universityin Ohio, the University of South Carolina and James Madison University in Virginia, among them – have Safe Zone and Safe Space programs in place....colleges-tackle-free-speech-trigger-warnings-safe-spaces

    20 other small colleges:
20 Great Value Colleges with Safe Spaces - Great Value Colleges

Lots and lots of colleges have them, so you have to break the question down further as to what the safe spaces are used for to really make your argument (LGBTQ+, racial support in primarily white schools, pansification, etc).

Probably a good place to meet girls...

Remember folks - this isn't a rehearsal, this is The Show!8)

  • I have a Dr friend that told me while we we discussing “cry closets”. He told me a story back when he was doing his residency. A fellow resident didn’t show up for an emergency in the middle of the night for one of his patients. The Chief Surgeon called him in the next day. His explanation was he had to study for the State Licensing Exam and was too stressed to come in when other residents were available. The Chief profusely apologized and then promptly booted him out of his residency program saying he could restart the program again the following year when exams and patient welfare wouldn’t be such a stress issue for him. Guess “cry closets” have been around a long time - just not quite so “touchy feely” :00008172:

PS - the resident ended up being a Chiropractor / plenty time to cry then :00008359:

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • Since "cry closet" only popped up in the last week and it's creator made a phone booth with no windows in the common area of A college. I can only assume anyone else means "safe space". So, with no photo evidence @Shatneyman, no matter how you articulate it, I find it unlikely your daughters college has a "cry closet".

If an item costs $100 dollars and the seller says than can take a FEW dollars off, is it even possible to take a FEW dollars off of $100?

Based on the responses to my "few colleges" comment, and the percentages involved based on examples put forth of colleges with "safe spaces" in comparison to the number of college and university campuses in the US, I am now left to rethink "few" as a fraction of a percent. ?(:D

Semantics, like statistics, can be modified to mean whatever you want. Say something vague like " a few" and leave it open to interpretation. Technically a few is considered to be an arguably statistically significant percentage of the whole of whatever was being discussed. You say "few" and "mostly in California", and I give you evidence (the first two sites that came up on a lengthy list, and chosen because they are from, again, arguably neutral sources) that disagrees with your assessment.

You say a few, and I counter with, well, what is your definition of a few: "There were a few deaths in the US from ebola", or "a few people were upset when Trump was elected?".

Words matter. Especially as the First Amendment inches towards becoming a narrow and sociopolitically charged corridor bounded on either side by minefields, particularly for those who suffer from the stigma and privilege of being white and identifying as male.

It also must be just a few people that get killed in auto accidents, but a bunch get killed with guns. While we are at it, how many get killed with cell phones that no one wants to talk about.

  • Colleges have become bastions of liberal ideology whereby conservative views are suppressed - even punitive actions taken. @WOLF - that beautiful baby boy you have - don’t you want him to be prepared once he is entering this cold cruel world without your protection?? I can assure you that educators in general (save and except @sideseatdriver) do no such thing with passing kids to the next grade without proper skills, participation trophies, teaching we are all the SAME. We will never all be the same. No matter race or creed some will be much more driven with a burning desire to succeed - some will not !! I do not think you are paying close enough attention to the small changes made daily to our current society, Always remember Liberals are very patient and are happy with baby steps dismantling things in society they hate - balanced education for one - capitalism another!!

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • I'm paying enough attention @Bill Martin, I'm just not letting it get my panties in a bunch. Teachers are there to teach the basics. My wife and I are the ones tasked with forming him into a decent, well respected and respectful member of society. Do you think I'm the type that won't challenge him if he comes home from school with misinfirmation?

Side note: I realized today I like being right and setting up conflict. My wife and I were talking about buying tickets next weekend for "Deadpool" and the new "Avengers" movie. Watching one and walking across the hall to watch the other. Fully anticipating a challenge to our walking from one to the other. I laid out a scenario where I would argue with the person, never revealing I had tickets for the second movie, until they were frustrated, red in the face and attempting to kick us out of the building. Knowing I would be right and they would being fighting with half the full information. Just for fun. My wife couldn't see the fun in that plan. ?( I apologize if this part of me has caused anyone grief. ;)

I just love to set back enjoy the conversation....

You say a few, and I counter with, well, what is your definition of a few:

Don't bother @sideseatdriver if you say anything that is against @WOLF ideology, you must be lying. I know my daughter lied because I don't have photos. I took my sling for a ride today,... must be lying because I don't have photos

  • President Obama lied and covered up resulting in lost American lives, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lied and covered up resulting in lost American lives, Trump may have lied and may have covered up screwing a porn star ten years before he became President. I guess that gives the Dems and Libs purpose to take the moral high ground??? @WOLF - known your politics for a long time and you are a very reasonable left leaner and will teach your son very well. The liberal thoughts are being instilled very young and depending on the University he chooses they will attempt to poison him against conservative issues. Libs cannot win on facts so I believe their plan is to raise a generation of socialists to change America forever!!

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • LOL I can't help but laugh as these post continue to go higher and higher as @Bill Martin recovers in front of his television missing his coveted daily doses of fine cigars and "fine tea".

"particularly for those who suffer from the stigma and privilege of being white and identifying as male." Wow..now this is where words really count right? I'll have to think about this one for a bit..not sure how the male skittles feel about not being white and how that statement may affect them.

Whether it's Bill, Barack, George or Donald...they will carry some political baggage we can agree?? To pretend to be blind to the facts don't make them not exist..i.e. "Trump may have lied and may have covered up...." don't change the narrative. As with all who are POTUS, they will be judged on their time in office. You can't start on Monday screaming for ethical and moral standards but change them on Wednesday to fit how you need your week to end..IMHO.

In my days...if a woman wanted you to kiss her, you knew it and you weren't being slapped. If she slapped you and hated you--you'd crossed the line...some men never grew out of crossing the line. They just became better at hiding their predatory nature.

Politics suck..bullying by numbers suck..people who close their minds without the desire to see the validity in an argument--well...only they know.

Happy Mother's Day to all those amazing moms on the forums. I pray that you're able to watch over and bless your families, as God does for us all.

  • *Written in a non-argumentative, exasperated, disappointed, and weary tone - not to be read as hostile, sarcastic, or otherwise argument inducing manner*

@Zorasmiles your response proves my point. I do not desire to belittle the history of oppression that follows the white male, but I do not believe that oppressing the oppressor serves society as a whole any better. You take a statement, and then blanket it to all of the male skittles. What about the skittles women since you fail to mention them? What about those men who identify as women, and the skittles version of them since you also fail to mention them? You, even in your broader disdain for my statement, only apply it to the realm in which you occupy in your attempt to voice fill in the appropriate emotion here.

    THAT IS MY POINT.

Take the word "brother", as it is bandied about fairly frequently on this forum. Purely from a sociological perspective it is misogynistic, and racist. The broad application of the masculine term automatically removes the female from the application although there are numerous female members on this board (I do acknowledge that a few of the women on here are noted as "sis", but I am using this purely for a point of discussion). It is also racist, as cultural undertones indicate a shift from the use of "brother" in the African American culture to "bro" in the 1970's, which would signify that the use of the full word is used in this context to alienate those members of color, of whom there are at least a few (depending on your definition of a few). Although noting here that the use of "bro" could be considered racial appropriation depending on who uses it to whom. Perhaps this may seem a simple representation of my point, but it serves its purpose. In one gesture, whereby nearly all of the people on this forum who are using it do so in a purely inclusive manner, they are, instead, walking the corridor between minefields, or even walking straight into one. How do you fix it? Instead of brother, perhaps "friend"? But does "friend" identify the bond that many members have? Do you just remove a word at all and leave whatever relationships that are forming to do so without any words?

Now switch that thought. If you were to use the word "brother" to the people on this forum, because you do so as an African American male, the social perception is that you are doing so in an all-inclusive manner. You have crossed the racial boundaries, and since you started it, then the person in receipt can answer back with the same response no matter the color, and it would be appropriate.

Technically speaking, I should not be using "male" and "female" in my argument as you could debate whether or not the genders should be defined in such a binary manner, so perhaps one of the gender neutral terms should be applied? Which one? Xim? Ner?

We, as a society, are becoming so focused on the victim mentality that statements such as "he/she/xe/xim/xer said this and it hurt my feelings so he/she/xe/xim/xer should not be allowed to say that anymore" are becoming normal. The moment that happens, you begin to erode the First Amendment.

No, I do not support hate speech. No, I don't support racist jokes. No, I don't support misogynistic jokes. No, I don't support homophobic jokes. In general I DO NOT SUPPORT STUPIDITY. But I also do not support curbing the full use of the First Amendment in order to curb that stupidity (also noting here that hate speech is not covered by the First Amendment).

And as a complete aside from that section of the commentary, you mention that if a woman slapped you, you stopped. The point, from a female perspective, is you never should have gone in for the kiss. Your unwanted attention, including the contact, is considered sexual assault. Is it minor? Yes. Would it get reported? No. But it is, at its roots, sexual assault. Your innocent misinterpretation and reaction to a situation is sexual assault. So you stop with that woman. And you do it with someone else, who also slaps you. Guess what, that too, is sexual assault.

You know what everyone (is that inclusive enough?), I'm out. These conversations are meant to be had over a beer where you can see body language and hear sarcasm and with people who know you for you, or are at least willing to learn. These are the conversations I have with my gay friends and my skittle friends and my transgender friends, not with people who don't know shit about me. And yes, I do have those friends *shocker!*. Have a good night all!

  • Wow...we went to "brother". Making that assumption with the context with how "I may, or may have used it" to expand ....naah never mind, I can't chase that rabbit hole tonight LOL I think you have proved my point @sideseatdriver. You made a magical leap that left your initial disclaimer like a lame duck Congressional session lol

FYI as a child you have an innocent misinterpretation of what is to be a kiss. As an informed teenager, young adult...you know what is right and what is wrong. Yes, it is all sexual assault. No blurred lines. See, when one country singer sings about receiving a note to "check yes or no", that was the green light.

Yes, these conversations are meant to be had over a glass of a person's favorite beverage..I'll take water, tea... All too often in this age we spend time connecting over keyboards and keystrokes...well, they just create more problems. At the end of the day, despite some of the craziest things I see members type and thirty likes go up immediately--I have to remember that they are entitled to how they feel.
