Some of the aftermarket wiring jobs I see, it is no surprise one burst into flames!
Another Slingshot Engulfed in Flames

Yeah, I would like for Polaris to comment, but I agree that a lot of guys are installing light kits with no knowledge of how it works, very eeasy to overheat componenents and start a fire, especially with the fuse box so close to the fuel line.
Having worked on the fuel tank, pump, etc, Its hard to see where there could be a fuel leak that would cause the SS to burn spontaniously like that.
I would put my 2 cents on modified electronics that got a botch job done and this is the result.

I do have first hand experience with Polaris and what could have been a very bad thing.
My first SS was about a week old when I had a rather smokey moment in my garage. I was tinkering around with the radio playing when suddenly the rear section under the rear fin started to spew smoke and I could smell plastic and eletric wire burning. Switched off the ignition and let the smoke settle. Pulled the rear camera and the wiring had overheated and possible had flamed out a little. All I know is the fuel tank was about 4" away...
I took images and sent Polaris a detailed PowerPoint report.I'm like most on this one regarding not enough info and crappy reporting. It's all opinions and no real investigative reporting going on these days.

Looks like it burned front to rear so something under the hood started it.
With power on the fuel pump will attempt to pressure the fuel rail, if the line is broken it would free flow gas trying to reach operating pressure.

Totally agree. I was a Can-Am rider for 4+ years before I switched over to the SS. In those 4 years, I had no problems whatsoever with the Spyder. Trust me, I was hearing alot about how the Spyder was a rolling time-bomb waiting to burst into flames. Never happen during my tour. If I'm not mistaken, I think only 5 or 6 actually erupted into flames...I could be wrong. But if you think about it, BRP sold a buttload of those things, and only a small number had that type of problem. Granted, I know that none of us want to be in that minority...and if you think about it, most of us never will. This article left out a lot. And until I find supporting facts, I'm still going to ride it like I stoled it!
We all practice safe riding. We all practice pre and post checks. This just hammers home the actual idea of being just a little more diligent in our efforts.I was in Maggie Valley in 2013 at the Can Am Spyder event. Across the road from the fairground they had demo rides setup and ONE OF THE DEMO SPYDERS BURNT TO THE GROUND!

They have this video limited to playing only on youtube. Click the link and watch this thing go up in flames....

It doesn't get any worse than your product actually burning to the ground at a Corporate Sponsored Owners Event.....
-
Yeah but you get 10% off that demo...
-
Robert, I see now why you HATE spiders

Here is another Corporate Sponsored Event where the Spyder BURNED TO THE GROUND!!!!
THEY SUCK! I OWNED 2 of the 2013 SPYDERS AND THIS GIVES ME THE RIGHT TO SAY THEY SUCK!

HANG TIGHT AND ILL SHOW YOU HOW CLOSE MINE CAME TO BURSTING INTO FLAMES!!!!
Give me a few minutes and check back here. I have too go back to 2013 in my Google photos and grab some pictures.... Its hard to believe that ANYONE could be this damn ignorant.... You wont believe what I am about to show y'all....
-
Last time I checked brake fluid was flammable.
Stick with me y'all. I am getting to a point I promise....

Are y'all ready for the dumbest engineering idea ever..... Lets take a hot as hell catalytic converter and put it right under a plastic brake fluid manifold and lets run the back cylinder exhaust cook the gas tank that is 1" away...
Check out my brake manifold. It was melting when I sold my last Spyder.
I would say it had about 2 hot rides left before it melted thru and burst into flames...
-
Yeah but you get 10% off that demo...
it was a buy back and was rebuilt.... no problem ...
