There are some good looking rear fenders on the market, but all are pretty pricey (especially when converted to Cdn $$ and allowing for a big shipping fee). So I am starting to think about making one. Was thinking a front fender from an old Honda Big Red (or any similar atv trike) might be a good starting point. Has anybody gone down that road??

I had to refresh my memory a little bit. Fender size is decent. Will you fabricate your own mounting bracket? Keep us posted!!

Well I'm very early on in the "thinking about it " process. About 1 hour. Need to round up a fender and start from there. Yes, I will need to build some sort of bracket(s). No idea yet if it will move with the wheel (my preference from the appearance and function point of view) or attached to the black underbody above the wheel (likely a lot simpler).

Agree!! Got to make sure it is rigid enough to actually be functional. Can't wait to see the finished product. You might just be on to something great!!!!! -
This might just work! A long way to go - fitting, making brackets, prep and painting. Not sure what it is off, but the Honda casting number is 61100-958-6800. I'll work on it a bit more and see how it looks. It cost $20 at a local atv yard so I will be out only my time if it looks crappy. In the pics it is just sitting on a1" thick block of wood on top of the tire. I will gently put some heat on the plastic in an effort to reduce the angle so it better matches the curve of the tire.

Looks like a great start

Heat and stretching out the current configuration will make all the difference. Didn't know the angles were so tight. Seeing the actual fender on the rear tire kinda' surprised me. But for a $20 investment...!?!?! It could be the start of something!!!! Keeping my eye on this one!!!!!

Did a bit of heating. With a concrete block on top. Backwoods engineering underway here!!! Made the angle less severe.

Wow! Again... Such a talented community...

I am constantly amazed at the talent displayed here!!!

Although I have the Rivco fender, I've been looking for a straight-sided heavy plastic trash can that I might be able to adapt as a close-fitting fender. Unfortunately, the ones I've seen so far are not straight-sided.

Trash can fender...

Wheel movement with suspension travel - does anybody know how much vertical movement the wheel has with full compression of the coil-over? Assuming stock suspension. Just wondering how far above the tire a fender needs to be if the fender were mounted to the black underbody rather than to the shock mounts.

First semi-final mock-up. Looks decent. Aluminum brackets are bolted together but will be welded. Not road tested yet but a static test has no wiggle-wobble (an SAE term, no doubt). So I guess I will keep on down this $20 fender road.
-
Hey not bad for say $20.00 buck investment so far..
-
Here is the template and actual bracket for mounting the fender to the swingarm. Ignore the big hole - it was in the scrap I had on hand. This is 3/8" aluminum, although I'm sure 1/4" would be fine. Just used what I had.

Paint help needed. I think I will be painting the fender the gray metallic body colour of my base SS. But using a rattle can. On another forum I saw reference to Shark Gray (recent model Corvettes), but I don't expect to find that in aerosol (although a local auto body shop could mix it, but pricey). What else is close and more commonly available?

Great! Thanks for the info. That paint should be easy to find.

Paint applied. Just waiting to get aluminum brackets back from the welder.
