Sounds like the oil is not draining back to pan, make sure the return line is unrestricted and free flowing.

@Casey_SS have you pulled the oil pan and confirm oil is free flowing in pan and nothing is causing a restriction in the flow? Or at least dumped oil thru the drain line with pan plug off and confirm free flowing. If it only smokes on restart my guess when running the presssue from feed line is forceing oil thru restriction and when you shut down you loose that pressure and oil backs up? Just a guess??

That’s my understanding also @'Reaper’ but the by-pass that open when the filter gets dirty also Causes back pressure and opens with Oil that’s cold and viscous at startup. I could be completely wrong but that’s the way I understand it.

Me too on the bi-pass, does not seem like a good thing but must be a reason. From my history the small stuff causes bearing failures, that film of oil a bearing rides on is thin less than 5 micron, large particals would not even get in to do damage. IMO

My turbo was fine and I’m still running the HAHN turbo on new DDM engine. My best guess is small particals passed thru the oil pump screen and then caused damage to oil pump and @Dave@DDMWorks explained to me the filter does go into by-pass on cold startup so the metal could have passed thru and the damaged the rod bearings and crank. My history in the hydraulic world is filter catch most particulate on first pass out the design is to clean oil after multi-passes.

Heads up warning to you New Turbo Installs. IMO drilling the hole in block for turbo oil drain line is a risk. Pull your oil pan and have fitting installed or if you drill pull pan and make sure it’s clean. I was super super careful using grease in flutes plus added air pressure to oil fill cap to blow debris out when I broke thru. After about 5k miles on my engine I begin having a knock and just spent last weekend at DDM getting a new engine drop in. Very expensive mistake. One small chip getti…

  • With Alumnium specks for a deep tissue cleaning. That was a classic “you dumbass” moment.

  • As far as the engine failure, after DDM broke down my engine we found metal in Pan, Oil Pump and Pick up. Excessive wear on oil pump and all bearings etc. I’m 99% sure the reason is 100% my fault. The metal shavings in the pan looks like they came from a drill bit. After taking pain staking care when drilling my turbo return line fitting it was the reason for the failure. I used gease on flutes as recommended plus added a couple psi by tapping oil fill cap so when I broke thru the block oil actu…

  • My Built DDM engine is alive and kicking and after a spirited ride along with Doctor Dave I had a big smile on my face and and a lil stain in my shorts. I’m not a comfortable passanger seat rider and holding the laptop for Dave as he does some flat foot pulls caused the lil stain. I would like to Thank Dave for the hospitality, it’s such a pleasure dealer with a professional group of people. Not just the products but the support and passion that comes with their products. • Hi Hoooo Hi Hooooo it’s off to DDM I go, picking my Sling this weekend with a shiney new bullet installed. After dropping her off a few weeks back Dave determined most likely a number 1 rod bearing failure so out with the rattling one and in with a built DDM works and a new tune. Thanks again for all the advise and help from my friends here and the educating phone conversations with Dave. After looking back at the beginning of this thread a couple of you said right away connecting rod and you na…

  • Thanks Rock, I missed that. The Welter system is Awesome so I’m sure this will be another great product from them.

  • Has this Cat come out of the bag yet? I have been wanting to add a Top but concerned about fumes getting worse.
